JE T'AIME: ONLINE SHOPPING SPECIAL

Nothing will ever replace the full-on, tactile retail experience, but let's face it ... we love to shop online! Here are some of my favorite places to score on the web:

I've been an Obesity and Speed fan for some time now. In addition to their diffusion line NOTHINGSACRED for Urban Outfitters, the peeps at OAS run their namesake line out of NYC. Go here for hand-dyed, one-of-a-kind evil-looking t-shirts and more.

What more needs to be said of OAK? This is the first place I visit when I'm in the mood to drop some cash. Oak stocks Alexander Wang, Pleasure Principle, Rad Hourani ... again, what's not to love?

Luisa Via Roma carries ultra-luxe European and Asian labels like Balmain, Ann Demeulemeester and Rick Owens. While most everything here is usually way out of my price-range, they markdown merchandise each season (up to 60%). If they don't have it at Barneys New York, chances are good they will have it here.

The pioneering force behind online, designer "flash-sales," Gilt Groupe is a great place to find excellent deals on everything ... and I do mean everything: from Alexander McQueen and Rick Owens apparel to D.L. & Co. candles, Jonathan Adler housewares (even underwear, area rugs and swim trunks), Gilt will have it for a limited time at extremely-reduced prices.

Another online-boutique; stocks Acne, Ksubi (one of my favorite brands), Bess and Dior Homme to name a few.

DON'T BE JEALOUS

As you already know, I'm an Alexander McQueen obsessive. It's one of the relatively few traits I have in common with my boyfriend of 8 years. I'm the lousiest gift-giver; if I manage to pick up a gift for anyone, you know it was last minute. Unless I happened to find the perfect gift ahead of time, in which case I will most likely ruin the surprise because I'm terrible at keeping secrets!
Anyway, for our last anniversary, my boyfriend bought us matching McQueen skull rings (he even collaborated with my mom, who's a fabulous jewelry designer, to replace the crystal details with diamonds). Yeah, he's pretty much perfect. Just a few months into the new year, we moved into a new, very glammy-whammy pad. We'd been moved-in just a few weeks when the awful news of McQueen's death hit. My heart was a little bit broken, and the boyfriend was pretty bummed as well. Right then, we both decided to splurge on this black and yellow "Scribble" scarf in honor of our hero's passing. It's honestly to-die-for, but since the limited-edition print is on a very expensive sheet of silk chiffon, neither of us wanted to wear it for fear of damaging it. So, what did we do? We had it framed! And, boy if it doesn't look exquisite!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Live at the Fillmore (a.k.a. Tell Me What Rockers to Swallow). The most absurdly awesome showmanship imaginable; three people are making that music, my friends ... just like Nirvana did. Only Nirvana never "jumped the shark" a.k.a. It's Blitz!

From YYY's - Live at the Fillmore:

AMERICAN APPAREL IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE?!

Gawker is reporting the latest American Apparel scandal (and it doesn't involve underage employees, sexual harassment or this guy). The L.A.-based sexy basics brand announced a $17.6 million dollar loss for the first quarter of 2010 .... maybe Dov Charney is in need of an intervention ... I mean, business reconstruction;).

HARPER'S BAZAAR HOLDS ANTI-COUNTERFEITING SUMMIT

As many of you already know, the counterfeit luxury-goods trade is serious business. It's hard to imagine that people actually pay money for those cheap-looking designer knockoffs, but they do, and the ramifications are heavy. Harper's Bazaar held their Sixth Annual Anti-counterfeiting Summit today, shedding light on the ugly truth behind those faux designer goods. I strongly urge everyone to check out this article, since I've had a hard time convincing people of the horrors behind those Canal Street Chanel-knockoffs.

KATE MOSS FOR TOPSHOP: VIDEO

This post is timely, considering I spent my evening alone watching the Kate Moss special on Biography Channel last night. Kate is hands-down my all-time favorite "supermodel."

Update: I guess the music in the video is Dallas' own Strange Boys?!

THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - "Something's Wrong"

ALBER ELBAZ ON THE FUTURE OF FASHION

"When Alber Elbaz phoned me from Paris, it was 8 p.m. there. The end of a long workday? No, he said, he was planning on spending a couple more hours in the studio after we finished. The word poetic invariably attaches itself to descriptions of the clothes Elbaz designs for Lanvin, but you get the feeling that behind the famous floppy bow tie, there is a hard-won sense of resolve. During our conversation, somewhat condensed here, he spoke frankly about the problems the industry faces, his observations frequently punctuated by bursts of humor."

DAVID LYNCH DIRECTS SHORT FILM FOR DIOR

One of my favorite film directors David Lynch was tapped by Dior to direct a short film starring Marion Cotillard ... it's a bit goofy, but I'll watch anything Lynch touches.

JOHNNY MAKEUP IS (ALMOST) FAMOUS

Say what you will about Johnny Makeup, but the party crasher/American Apparel poster boy gets around. I loved his potty-mouthed diva rap in the now-defunct NYC trio V.I.P. Party Boys; now he's fame-whoring his hairy ass allllll over Hollywood. If you care (or should I say dare), you can read this interview.

I'd much rather watch this:

OBSESSION: MATER SUSPIRIA VISION

I received an email from L.A. based gloom-rockers CROSSOVER last night, promoting a remix of their single "Dark Blue" by a band called MATER SUSPIRIA VISION.

. I'm a total sucker for all things evil or vaguely campy in that fake-blood, stylized violence kind of way, so MSV are right up my alley. Their sound has been dubbed "witch-house," "ghost drone" and "drag" ... whatever it is, it's my latest obsession!
Check out this promo video for MATER SUSPIRIA VISION's "Blood of Babylon:"

WILL IPAD KILL OFF THE PRINT MAGAZINE?!

Image via Stylenoir.

I love print media; I can't imagine life without the smell of the paper, the way it feels in your hands, on your fingers. Most of the fashion magazines I buy or subscribe to are either over-sized or collectible. How can one possibly dig up a ten-year old issue of Vogue Italia on an iPad? Or get the full-throttle rush of a fabulous fashion spread on 12"x6" glossy paper? Stylenoir thinks the whole idea is rubbish, while more tech-driven websites are confirming the certain death of publishing as we know it. What do you think? Do you or anyone you know already own an iPad, and if so, would you consider magazines obsolete?

COVER GIRL: SCARJO FOR V MAG

I'm not a huge Scarlett Johansson fan (I loved her in Lost in Translation) but I'm loving the soft hair and vaguely '90's styling of her cover look for the latest issue of V Magazine.

Side note: if any RM readers are in any way affiliated with V Magazine, can you please explain to me why I haven't received a single issue since paying for a subscription in January! So full of hate every time I check my mailbox and no V!

Anyway, I really dig this return to "natural" beauty:

THE TEXAS LOVE TRIANGLE: A TOMMY BOY PRODUCTION

This post is oddly relevant given my recent musings on what it means to be a "DJ." Local DJ, blogger and video artist TOMMY BOY was approached by VICE to create a mix, and TEXAS LOVE TRIANGLE is nothing short of brilliant (I haven't even heard it yet, but my friend Tommy is a genius, so there's no doubting the quality of his work). He wrote a very heartfelt description of the project, which ended as thus:

"There is something sacred in the geometry connecting Houston, Austin, and Dallas - this love triangle that we’re all a part of. This mix is a testament to what friends and neighbours are capable of and it’s a fitting time capsule for this time and place. Don’t Mess with Texas."

Aw ... so true. If you're not yet familiar with Tommy Boy's art, I suggest you head over to his blog ARAWA.FM. He's created visuals for some of the coolest acts around ( CFCF and Telepathe come to mind), and he also happens to be one of the most genuine and amiable people I've ever met on the Dallas scene. Be sure to catch his club night VIDEO REHAB every Wednesday at Tradewinds Social Club in Oak Cliff.

MOVIE POST: TV PARTY

I saw this amazing documentary on Pitchfork.tv a long time ago, and I haven't been able to buy a copy anywhere! TV Party profiles the eponymous, infamous Manhattan cable-access program, hosted by Glenn O'Brien in the early-1980's. Everyone who was anyone in those days stopped by the TV Party studio to smoke grass, look fabulous and "jam" with no-wave pioneers like DNA and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks as well as decidedly more "glam" new-wave acts like Blondie and Talking Heads.

If you have a chance to see this film, see it! Here is a clip from the show, featuring a performance by seminal no-wavers Tuxedomoon:

GIVENCHY ADS FEATURE TISCI'S TRANSGENDERED ASSISTANT

The funny thing about all of this is that I can't even decide who Lea T. is in this photo! They all look fabulously androgynous, and I love Riccardo Tisci!

Transgendered models are nothing new to the fashion world; I have a very dear friend who worked at Patricia Field in the eighties (in drag). He was quite the socialite, tearing up NYC every night: go-go dancing for Warhol at Area, bumping into Madonna at Palladium, etc. One of his best friends at the time was Teri Toye, transgendered muse and model for Stephen Sprouse.

Teri was arguably the first trans "It-Girl," long before Amanda Lepore and Sophia Lamar. I even heard that she walked the runway for Chanel ... can anyone confirm this rumor? Toye eventually dropped out of the NY party scene, eschewing the glamorous life to become a real estate agent and lead a "normal" life. But, as Teri's Myspace profile would have you know, she's "back!" At 51 years-young ... take that Middle America!

Here's a clip from a Sprouse fashion show, circa 1984!

GAGA'S PHOTO DIARY

Lady Gaga was snapped by photographer Matthew Williams for a spread in the new issue of V Magazine. Click here for a sneak peek.

In other Gaga news, the pop star was asked to perform at the Met's Costume Institute Gala by none other than Anna Wintour! The Lady recalls her reaction upon hearing from "Nuclear Wintour:"

“I’ll never forget when Anna Wintour called me to play at this event, she called me and said, ‘I would like you to play at the Met gala, but I just want to make sure, because I’ve seen you perform before, that you won’t be swearing during the performance.’ So Anna, I will do my [bleep]-ing best!”

Gaga rocked an Armani catsuit for her appearance at the Met ... Can anyone find video of the performance?

REMEMBER WHEN ... I USED TO BE A DJ?

I took this photo at fellow DJ and blogger Keith P's birthday party maybe a year ago (the theme was "Death in June," so I was going for that half-dead look). I DJ'd the event, and it was my last time to man the decks, so to speak. Yes, I used to be a DJ. Since then, my beloved Macbook died from consumption (a.k.a. rusted hard-drive) and I turned my creative energies elsewhere, forgoing my illustrious career as DJ once and for all. If any of you ever saw me in action, you would know that while, musically, my taste level is unsurpassed, my performance abilities depended wholly on the amount of liquor/and/or substances I had flowing through my bloodstream. I guess I never really wanted to take the whole thing too seriously, since a serious DJ is usually a bore and no fun to hang out with.
Well, it's safe to say that my career in playing music for drunk hipsters never negatively impacted my social life; I've met many real DJ's that I actually have a ton of respect for (Felix da Housecat, Larry Tee, the MisshapesMetro Area) as well as played alongside a very diverse and talented group of musicians (AIDS WolfFaux Fox, Glass Candy, Farah) and truly amazing local DJ's. But in the end, I decided that I couldn't handle the performance anxiety that comes with the job, and in hindsight I always enjoyed the recording process more than the live experience anyway. Which brings me to the impetus behind this post: I was browsing my external hard-drive and I came across a load of mixes I recorded under the guise of Pretty Vacant (yes, that was my nom de guerre) and they're actually pretty good! I thought I'd share one of them here:

MADONNA SMOLDERS FOR INTERVIEW MAG

The one and only Queen of Pop (I'm looking at you Britney and Gaga) MADONNA was shot by the always amazing Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for the May 2010 issue of Interview. No matter how you feel about the (50 year-old) Ms. Ciccone, you've got to admit that she simply does. it. better. Need further proof?

Every year, the fashion and film A+ list convene at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC for the annual Costume Institute Gala (the theme for 2010 was "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity") ... and it's basically the red carpet event of the year for the fashion-obsessed:
